Puppies!!!!

My boyfriend and I have 3 rat terriers that we love as if they were our children. The two females (Mooi and Juddisch) belong to my boyfriend. He had them before we met. The Little boy dog is my Gerhard. Jason and I bought him when he was just a little baby, and, he became my baby!

As you all probably know the females come into heat twice a year. We try to keep them separated from Gerhard when they are in heat but, sometimes we just don't succeed. It is not really a big deal if they do get pregnant because we are willing to take care of the puppies. We either sell them or give them away to loving families. Yesterday Juddisch had six puppies! I always get excited, they are so cute when they are babies. They are cute until they start chewing on everything...like my shoes!

The reason I wanted to talk about this topic today is because I noticed a billboard on my way home from school the other day. It was talking about spaying or neutering your pets. (I would never do that to mine, but, I am a responsible parent to mine.) The billboard said " What if you could have 18 babies a year?" WOW...that got my attention! If people are not willing to take care of their pets then they should not have them! Our shelters are full of animals that people give up on..it is so sad!

The other day on Chanel 3 news, there was a story about people dropping their dogs off at the dump. As if these precious pooches were garbage. What is wrong with people. Leaving these dogs to fin for themselves! A couple of days later they had a story that somebody went to the dump and shot one of the dogs. It makes me so sad!

  1. I saw that story on the news also. It made me so sad. I used to live in Longstreet, which is also in Desoto Parish, and I would always see abandoned dogs on the highway that went to my house. I always wanted to stop and save them or atleast feed them. One day my Mom was on her way home and saw a dog she just couldn't pass by. She ended up bringing home this skinny mutt that we named Road Dog. He was so sweet and loyal to us. He was a great dog; I can not imagine why somebody dropped him off in the middle of nowhere. We ended up keeping him for a long time. I wish he was still around. Oh no, now I am sad again. He gave us some great years and now all abandoned dogs I see remind me of him. Love you Road Dog!

  2. I have a Yellow Lab that I bought from some people that abused the dog. They treated it so bad and it took so long before he would act normal around us. So I agree on the deal of not getting pets if your not going to take care of them.

  3. I didn't hear that story. How tragic for the little pooches to be given a life and then dumped like garbage. My husband I lived in Elm Grove a couple of years ago and a stray cat came up and we started feeding her. I am not sure if we adopted her or she adopted us, either way I grew to love her. Later when our lease was up we bought a house in Haughton and I wanted to take the kitty(we named Lightning) with us, but she clawed me up each time we tried to take her with us. I left a bag of food and went by as long as the park owner would let me so I could make sure she was fed. I remember feeling so sad that she would not go with us. I am not sure where she is now. I asked the old neighbor to keep an eye on her and feed her. It's been over a year now and it still upsets me. After we moved to Haughton, my husband got me another kitty and we named him tiger for his yellow and white stripes. I tried to housetrain him, my first time, and it was not good. So, we put him out in the yard with a cat house and a comfy pet bed. He seemed to be scared at first, but then he adapted and became quite a man. About three months ago, he ran into the path of someone and we had to bury him. I am still sad about that. We take in strays still. We have one named Midnight, another named Lucky, and another named Possum (long story). I love animals and I cannot see how anyone can dessert them. Shame on them. They would not like it much if someone dumped them off like trash.

  4. Sad, sad, sad. When I was a college student in Baton Rouge, that's how we got our first dog...students used to abandon them when they moved or graduated.

Here in RR Parish, we don't have an animal shelter. Therefore, we have tons of feral cats (who really like my yard) and packs of dogs roaming around Coushatta. The cops shoot them if they act too agressively, but what else can they do? One of those dogs killed one of my cats. We need a shelter (no kill) here.
